Australia defeat South Korea by 4-2 in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Hockey Update
Australia faced South Korean in the 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, took place at the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia, on May 11. The match concluded in favour of Australia with 4-2 victory over the Korean team.
The opening half was ended with the Australian squad leading the game by two goals, 3-1 over South Korea. Among the scorers from Australia, Timothy Deavin, Mark Paterson and Glenn Turner added one goal apiece to put their squad ahead on the score-board.
From the other side, You Hyo Sik made a solitary effort to bring his side into the game. They found few chances to reduce the lead, but they failed to avail the chances and period ended with trailing by two goals, 3-1.
South Korea roared back in the second half of play to show their action. They found a chance in the 39th minute that was attempted by Hyun Hye Sung, resulting into a score at 3-2. After reducing the lead, the Korean team started more offensive
game in search of equaliser.
South Korea obtained their second short corner in the 45th minute of the game, but to no avail. Jonathan Charlesworth made an impressive dive to save the ball and cleared from the circle.
After an end-to-end play for ten minutes, South Korea earned their third short corner in the 56th minute of the match. However, they failed to capitalise the chance. In a counter-offence, the Kookaburras earned their first penalty corner of the
game in the 57th minute.   
From the Australian side, Ciriello made the attempt, but it was brilliantly deflected by Lee Myung Ho in the South Korea goal. In the defensive effort, the ball touched with the foot of Korean player that awarded second short corner to Australia.
This time the attempt made by Paterson and Ciriello was successfully blocked by the Korean goalkeeper. The both sides were playing fast and furious game, as one wanted to hold back the lead, while the other team  was looking for an equaliser.
Australia’s Mark Paterson managed to take the ball inside the circle and struck a wonderful shot past the Korean goal-keeper, increasing the lead at 4-2. In a counter-offence, South Korea earned another short corner in the 69th minute but the
hit went wide.
As the final horn sounded, the Kookaburras succeeded to continue their winning-streak in the fourth game of the Azlan Shah tourney. The next game will be played between Pakistan and India, the most crucial competition of the day.
