Australia defeats Germany by 1-0 in 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy
Australia’s Hockeyroos finally managed to record their first victory in the ongoing 2011 Rabo FIH Women’s Champions Trophy at Wegner Stadium, in Amsterdam, the capital city of Netherlands as they defeated Germany by 1-0 in a hard fighting game. The last
five minutes decided the match, which was played on June 28, 2011.
In their previous two matches, the Australian women did not perform as per the expectations of the coach and lost both the games. In the first of their previous two matches they were simply outclassed by the Dutch women, who showed no mercy to the Hockeyroos
and thrashed them by 3-0.
In their second encounter against their traditional rivals, the Kiwis, the Hockeyroos showed a lot of improved performance as compared to their show against Netherlands, but still they failed to score the much needed victory. They lost by 3-2 to the Black
Sticks women.
However, in their final pool match against Germany, the Hockeyroos succeeded in breaking the dead-lock and found the right track. Although they could not manage to qualify for the medal round, yet the victory will be a morale booster for them in their coming
games in the placement group.
Although the Germans were more dominant in the entire match, yet the Australians held their nerves till the end and scored the winning strike, five minutes before the end of the match.
In the first half, the German women controlled the game for most of the time and enjoyed almost two third of the possession. They had also three penalty-corners in the first half, to which they failed to score any goal. The Hockeyroos too created a number
of good scoring opportunities in the first half and also had three penalty-corners, but the result was similar to their opponents and they could not score any goal. The match remained goal-less till the interval.
In the second half, the Hockeyroos looked more electrifying with their pace and penetrated into the German defence circle, but they had to wait till the 66th minute, when Jodie Schulz did the job for Australians on their sixth penalty-corner of
the match.
Trailing by one goal, the German women tried their level best efforts to score the equaliser, but they were unable to find the net in the dying moments of the second half. The match concluded at 1-0 to the Hockeyroos.
