Australia defeats Great Britain by 2-1 in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Hockey Recap
Australia played against the Great Britain in the 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which is currently underway, in the Malaysian city of Ipoh, on May 12, 2011. The contest concluded in favour of the Australian side with a 2-1 triumph over the Great
Britain.
In the first half of play, the Aussies dominated the field with the ball control from the early minutes of the game. Though, the British strikers came into action on a few occasions, but to no avail. The Aussies were awarded a short corner in the 7th
minute of the game that was converted in the hands of Brent Dancer in the 8th minute.
In the counter-strikes, the British found many chances to level the game, but they failed to do so. Christopher Ciriello doubled the tally, when they earned third short corner of the match in the 29th minute. The British players failed to bring
their side into the score-net in the first 35 minutes of play.
The Australian players continued to overpower the Great Britain team with complete ball dominance. In the game of attacks and counter-attacks, Great Britain earned their second short corner in the 38th minute of the match, but to no avail. The
attempt of Richard Mantell was wasted, as the shot was brilliantly deflected from the opponent side. In a counter-offence, the Aussies attacked the British semi-circle at times, but the ball was cleared from the defenders.
In the 46th minute of the game, the Kookaburras earned their fourth penalty corner which was played by Ciriello who sent the shot at wide and failed the chance to increase the score margin.
In a matter of nine minutes, Great Britain received their second short corner of the second half of play in the 55th minute of the game. Though the shot from Mantell was saved from the British side, but they were awarded another penalty corner
to Britain. This time Richard Mantell did not miss the chance and reduced the lead down to a single point.
Australia in the 59th minute of the game received fifth short corner of the game, but it was saved in the hands of James Fair. In the concluding minutes, the Aussies started more defensive game and rode away the field with a 2-1 victory.
