Australia dominates in 49er and 470 M races on Day 2 at Kieler Woche 2011: ISAF Sailing World Cup
Australia’s 49er and 470 sailing teams have finished on top on the second day of Kieler Woche 2011, the final round of International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup, on Sunday, June 19 at Kiel in Germany. The 49er class was sailed by Will Phillips and Sam Phillips, while the 470 M was sailed by Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page.
Weather conditions on the Kiel waters were pretty extreme as the wind was blowing from 12 to 15 knots and shifted to 20 knots early during the race, along with heavy rain. However, Phillips pair, Sam and Will, managed to finish first overall with 19 points, followed by Denmark’s team at 24 points.
In the 470 M regatta, Malcolm Page and Mathew Belcher retained their first day lead as they sailed brilliantly during the race. The 470 M defending champions nudged the Croatian crew of Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic nine points down in the end.
While speaking to the local media after the race, Belcher said, “Malcolm and I are sailing well and are happy with where we are at after two days of racing. The competition is close with the world number two crew from Croatia right behind us.”
He added, “Tomorrow will be an interesting day, as we’ll try and consolidate our lead before we head into the last day of racing.”
