Australia dumps selector Merv Hughes ahead of Ashes
Merv Hughes has been dumped as an Australia selector less than a month before Australia lock horns with England in a bid to win back the Ashes.
The former paceman has been cut from the National Selection Panel as the result of a decision to reduce the number of selectors from five members to four.
Hughes had been a member of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s selection panel since 2005, when he replaced former Australia skipper Allan Border as a selector.
The four-member panel that will now select Australia’s Ashes squad is comprised of chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch, David Boon, Greg Chappell and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Cox-c66230.
Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said in a statement that the board of directors “unanimously decided” that Boon, Chappell and Cox were the “best people” to join Hilditch on the four-member panel, after receiving feedback from the chairman of selectors.
“Andrew was clear in his assessment that Merv had been a good selector and a strong contributor around the selection table, but that Cox, Boon and Chappell were the better options to continue on the NSP,” Sutherland said.
“Unfortunately this means that Merv is no longer a member of the NSP. Merv has provided valuable input and expertise to the NSP during the past five years and Cricket Australia thanks him for his contribution during this time.”
