Australia edge out England in record Sydney chase AUS 334/8 in 49.2 overs
England’s poor run in the ODI series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 refuses to end as the tourists lose despite posting a mammoth 333 runs score in the sixth match of the series played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The hosts pulled off the chase in the last over of the match with four balls remaining, this was the highest run chase in Australia, at a venue that has staged some of the closest games in the history of limited overs cricket.
The Australian batsmen were in top form as they chased down the runs through a combined effort led by skipper Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, who scored 82 runs. Besides him, Mitchell Johnson and David Hussey also posted half centuries as the steep target was overhauled
by the Aussies.
The win is set to put them in the right frame of mind ahead of their title defence of the World Cup that starts in the Subcontinent next month.
Australia started off their chase extremely positively. Openers, Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326, and, Brad Haddin, laid into the opening attack of the Poms.
Watson in particular was in flowing form, carrying on in the same vein as he had started at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the first match of the series. The all-rounder from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 posted his half-century off 34 balls striking 8 fours in the innings.
He was dismissed by left-arm spinner, Mike Yardy, with Andrew Strauss taking a fine tumbling catch.
Before that, Brad Haddin was caught by Jonathan Trott off James Anderson for 20 runs scored off 25 balls.
The Australian chase was put back on track by Mitchell Johnson and Callum Ferguson, who added 79 runs for the third wicket, Ferguson was run out chasing a quick run. He scored 46 off 44 balls.
Johnson was the next to go as he was sent packing by Kevin Pietersen, for 57 runs, scored off 59 balls scoring 1 four and 2 sixes in his innings.
The Aussies were led by a brilliant knock from captain, Clarke, at this stage. He scored 82 runs and took the team to the brink of a win before he was run out. His innings was compiled off 70 balls and included 4 fours and 1 six.
The hosts reached the target when John Hastings, inside edged the ball, to the fine-leg boundary.
The seventh and final match of the series would be played at WACA Perth, the hosts have an unassailable 5-1 lead in the series.
