http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 finally ends England’s Twenty20 winning streak
Australia have finally ended their losing streak in Twenty20 cricket, after they managed to defeat England by a close margin of four runs, in the second Twenty20 match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
This victory has been a long time coming, but the important thing for the Kangaroos is that they have won the match, and drawn the Twenty20 series 1-1. After losing the Ashes 3-1 and the first Twenty20, the Australian team avoided the humiliation of another
series loss against England.
Chasing a total of 148, the English openers Steve Davies and Ian Bell started the innings with confidence. The pair gave a 60-run opening stand to the visitors, before Bell was bowled by Mitchell Johnson. He scored 39 runs from 30 balls, and hit three fours
in his innings.
After the first wicket, Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood didn’t last longer at the crease either, as both the batsmen fell cheaply. Davies played some good strokes before he was out for 29 runs. He was brilliantly caught by David Warner at mid-off.
Eoin Morgan and Luke Wright steadied the innings for England, but both of them were dismissed after getting starts. Morgan scored 14 runs whereas Wright managed 18. Chris Woakes was promoted up the order in this match after his heroic effort in the first
Twenty20. He didn’t get the opportunity to face too many balls this time, and played a cameo of 11 runs off six balls.
Woakes remained unbeaten at the end of the innings. The other batsman along-side him was Tim Bresnan, who managed 15 runs. However, these cameos were all in vain for the English all-rounders, as their side fell agonisingly short of the target.
Johnson was the star of the show for Australia with the ball. He took three wickets in the match. The man of the match from the first match, Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 was once again impressive with the ball. He took two wickets and gave away just 17 runs in his four
overs.
The player of the match was awarded to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aaron-Finch-c881, who scored a tremendous knock of 53 runs off just 33 balls.
Both teams will next feature in a seven-match one-day international (ODI) series before the World Cup. Australia will be hoping for a positive series ahead of the World Cup.
