Australia grabs a 2-0 lead against South Korea – Davis Cup 2012
Australians, Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden, won both of their matches to give their country a 2-0 lead in the second round of the Davis Cup, Group one tie in Brisbane.
World number 36, Tomic, defeated South Korean number two, Min Hyeok Cho, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 in the first rubber to give Australia a 1-0 lead.
Ebden, ranked 75th in the world, extended the advantage to 2-0, as he dumped Suk-Young Jeong 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles match.
South Korean team is without its top six players who withdrew from the event due to some problem with their federation.
The 19-year-old, Tomic, faced some early scare in the first singles match, as Cho broke him in the opening game and went on to take a 3-1 lead in the first set. However, the Australian fought back and took control of the proceedings
to win it 7-5.
The upcoming star did not look behind after that, as he captured the next two sets with the same score line of 6-3.
Tomic is leading the Australian side in the absence of Lleyton Hewitt. Former world number one, Hewitt, is unfit to play due to a foot injury.
The Youngster said, while giving an interview to media, "The better the player, the better you play - especially for me. The trick is playing against guys like this (Cho) who are lower ranked - it will help me build my game. In
the future, when you are at the top, you can only play worse players than yourself so you have to lift - he (Cho) was a good player to work on these things."
Chris Guccione and Marinko Matosevic will make up the doubles team of Australia and try to give their team an unbeatable lead, as they take on Jeong and Jae-Min Seol in the third rubber on Saturday.
If Australians win the tie, they will get through to the World Group play offs and meet either India or Uzbekistan for a place in the elite 16-team competition. Australia is out of the World Group of Davis Cup since 2007.
