Australia in April - what should I pack for a trip to Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne?

My friend and I are traveling to Australia April 9 - 21st. We are stopping first in Sydney, then on to Cairns and finishing the trip in Melbourne. It seems like the temp will range from 70 - 80s during the day. Is this accurate? Does anyone have any packing suggestions? Shorts, pants, skirts? What about the nights? Any and all help would be much appreciated!!

  1. Going between Melbourne and Cairns you will experience everything, unfortunatly your gonna need to pack for all seasons, but take into consideration that winter in Australia doesnt get nearly as cold as it does in the northern hemisphere.

Cairns will be warm, shorts swimmer and a tshirt is all you will need.

    Sydney Jeans and a tshirt.

Melbourne Jeans a tshirt and a jumper and perhaps a rain jacket.

Skirts, Jeans, Shorts, Swimmers, Tshirts, 1 or 2 jumpers and 1 rain jacket.

We use degrees celcius in Australia. Cairns will be in the high 20s low 30s. Sydney high teens to mid 20s. And Melbourne high teens, low 20s.

The problem with Melbourne is you experience all four seasons in one day. So layering is a good idea.

Nights you will find comfortable in Cairns, Mild in Sydney and Cooler to cold in Melbourne.

    Hope this helps.

  2. You MUST love flying...

Only answering this since you mentioned a round-about way of travelling to these places.

Personally I would book to go to Melbourne before going to Cairns, and besides that, you may have good reason for doing it this way.

Have fun no matter. It's great all over this land at this time of year normally.

  3. We just returned from Sydney on the 15th.  It was quite warm in the 80's and breezy.  The kids wore shorts and tank tops or t-shirts most days.  I wore Capri's and sleeveless shirts.  We were very comfortable, although one evening a pair of jeans and a light jacket would have helped.

Don't forget your sunnys (sunglasses) and thongs (sandals).  Do prepare for being in one of the most beautiful places on earth.  Don't try to take any food or plant products into Australia.  Wait until you arrive to exchange currency.  Be prepared to pay $3.00 for a can of pop.  Opt instead for a bottled water that you refill at motel.  Meals are expensive but plenty of bargains can be found in places like Cronulla (a beach community west of Sydney).  No taxes, it is included in the price.  No free refills or ketchup(tomato sauce).  Gas is high too, $1.49 a LITER which is about $6.00 a gallon.  Get a fuel efficient car if you're driving much.  Hope this helps! G'day mates!

  4. can i suggest you to pack a rain coat, because although it has been dry but it is rainy seasons down here,  and sometimes it is not just raining, it is storm!!   And in where my office are, when there is a storm, I always found at least 10 or more broken umbrellas there...

  5. Pack lightly! You will be carrying your own bag. Wheels on your bag is a good idea. Bring a small daypack to carry things in the city and on field trips.

You can purchase many things (shampoo, cosmetics, sunblock, etc.) in Australia. Shopping in another country is fun! A general travel rule is to pack half of what you think you need and twice as much money.

You will be able to do your laundry at least once per week. You can wear clothes more than one day or wash clothes out by hand, in a pinch.

Dress in Australia is very casual so pack accordingly.  But you might want some nice clothes to go out in Sydney and Cairns.

It will be fall in Australia!  Make sure you bring clothes that will protect you from the cold and rain.

    sandals for Cairns

    pool shoes or flip flops

    Outback: sturdy shoes

Sydney: comfortable walking shoes (can be the same shoes as above)

    hat for sun

    sunglasses

any medicine you need to take regularly, in original prescription bottle.

    spare pair of prescription glasses

bring a pair of glasses even if you wear contacts. It may be too dusty in the interior for contacts. Notebook(s)

    reading packet

    textbook

    pens, pencils

    personal reading material

    Leave behind:

small appliances such as hairdryers (you might as well buy a cheap one in Australia)

    valuable jewelry

    uncomfortable shoes

    illegal drugs

    Photocopy:

passport, credit cards, driver's license.  Write down the phone number for reporting problems with your credit card.  Keep one photocopy in your luggage and leave a copy at home with someone (like your parents) that you could contact if you lost your luggage.  Do NOT write down any PINS, SSN or any other personal information on this sheet.

    Have a Nice Trip!

  6. I'm living in Cairns right now, it's about 30 degrees around midday but it rains often, so just bring a raincoat, some shorts, a t - shirt. I don't think it ever gets cold here but bring a jacket or a hoodie just in case. Oh and flip flops...you can't wear shoes here. Some people just go bare foot.

Melbourne, I went 2 months ago, probably now, it's beginning to get colder..But the weather there is really crazy, it was like 49 degrees and then the next day it was 18. You need to bring some jeans, a jacket (thick and thin), a pair of shorts, a couple of t - shirts and PJs!

Sydney, is like Melbourne, except maybe a bit warmer..I think Sydney's weather is the best..Uhm.. I used to live there..But I'm going there again after the school holidays start..which is 5th April.

Probably some shorts, a jacket, flip flops, shoes, jeans, and some shirts.

    Hope I helped.

  7. Go to;- www.weatherzone.com.au/

Ok.  Jeans, capris, shorts, a couple of summer tops, light / warm top (say something for a cool day/night)  and a jumper / sloppy joe.  Swimmers.  thongs, joggers.  A nice outfit if you want to go somewhere special.  Sunnies, good sunscreen (buy that here - less weight then, get a 30+)   Cairns weather should be really nice, but it can get quite cool at night sometimes.  It will still be hummid up there.  Sydney, well what can I say.  We haven't had a summer.  It is overcast here today, supposed to rain this arvo and for the next few days - so I suppose, its just a comfortable temperture really.  Nights are quite pleasant, can get quite cool in the early hours of the morning.  Melbourne, I'm not too sure whats been happening down there, but they can get umteen weather changes in a day sometimes, so I'd go prepared for anything thing there.  Maybe a local can help you out with more specific info on Melbourne.

    Me personally.

    1 jeans

    1 Capri pants

    1 Shorts

    Swimmers

2 t shirts    (I'd probably buy a couple while there) (use 1 to sleep in)

    1 long sleeve top

    1 fleecy jumper

    1 warm pj pants

    2 pairs socks

    Hat /cap

    Sunnies

    Thongs

    Sandals

    Joggers

You can buy swimmers here if you want - endless selections!

I'd also buy the sunscreen here 30+ and some insect repellant.

As someone else has already said, petrol is hovering around the $ 1.40 - $ 1.50 a litre here at the moment.  So if your renting a car, look for something economical.  You can always wash your clothes at public laundromats or at caravan parks / motels /hotels / b and b's and the like.

I hope you have a fantastic trip, stay safe and have fun.

Actually the elders weather site is pretty good too.
