Australia lift Men’s 4x100m freestyle crown: Day one – 2011 FINA World Championships
Day one of the 2011 FINA World Championships ended with scintillating performance of the Australian team in the 4x100m freestyle relay final in Shanghai, China, on Sunday, July 24.
The session of the meet organised the Men’s 4x100m freestyle final, where the Australian team of James Magnussen, Matt Targett, Matt Abood and Eamon Sullivan hit the finishing wall in 3 minutes and 11.00 seconds to clinch the gold medal.
While speaking about their performance in the respective meet, Sullivan said, “We've been working towards this for a long time. We haven't made it too public but deep down this is what we have wanted for a long time. With guys like Maggie (Magnussen), James
Roberts, they are only 20, it gives us a great opportunity for next year. We want to repeat Sydney (in London). We've got the talent. We've got the experience.”
The French squad of Alain Bernard, Jeremy Stravius, William Meynard and Fabien Gilot took home the silver medal with an impressive time of 3 minutes and 11.14 seconds. In the meantime, Michael Phelps, Garrett Gale Weber, Jason Lezak and Nathan Adrian of
United States snared the bronze medal with a sterling time of 3 minutes and 11.96 seconds.
Italy wound up fourth in 3 minutes and 12.39 seconds, while Russia earned fifth place honours with a time of 3 minutes and 12.99 seconds. South Africa finished sixth in the respective meet with a time of 3 minutes and 13.38 seconds, whereas, Germany picked
the seventh spot in a time of 3 minutes and 15.01 seconds. The eighth place went to Great Britain in a time of 3 minutes and 15.03 seconds.
Earlier, Netherlands’ team of Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Marleen Veldhuis and Femke Heemskerk took home the Women’s 4x100m freestyle crown with a winning time of 3 minutes and 33.96 seconds.
The American squad including Natalie Coughlin, Melissa Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Dana Vollmer earned the silver medal with a time of 3 minutes and 34.47 seconds, whereas, Germany’s Britta Steffen, Silke Lippok, Lisa Vitting and Daniela Schreiber grabbed
bronze title in 3 minutes and 36.05 seconds.
