Australia overpowers Greece in Men’s Water Polo: Preliminary Round Group A – London Olympic Games
Australia overpowered Greece in the preliminary round of Group ‘A’ Men’s Water Polo match on tenth day of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Monday, August 6.
The match was a true example of what we say a one sided match. Australia faced very little competition from Greece in the four-quarter game and made their way into the quarterfinal in an easy manner.
Greece scored opening goal of the game and depicted strong position in the first three minutes of the game. After few minutes, Australia responded with three goals while Greece was only able to score another goal and the Australian team enjoyed a lead of
one after the first quarter, as the score remained 3-2.
The second quarter saw elevated efforts of both teams but despite of scoring three goals, Greece failed to materialise as a dominant team on the scorecard.
Australian squad showed no leniency to their challengers and overpowered the effort of Greece’s team by accomplishing five goals. With their laudable efforts, they managed to extend their lead to three goals as the score went up to 8-5 after the second round.
The same continued in third quarter, where Greece once again was unable to overpower Australia. The Australian squad continued their relentless efforts and scored three consecutive goals while their effort was followed by just one goal accomplishment from
their rival squad. Subsequently, the score remained 11-6 after the completion of round three.
Last quarter of the game saw exhausting efforts from both teams but the lead of five goals was hard to overcome in the last eight minutes. Greece scored two goals in the final round of the game and their effort was levelled out by Australian team, which
also notched up two goals in the final round.
With no substantial improvement in the game, Greece lost the match from Australia with a margin of five goals, as the score was 8-13 after the round four.
Furthermore, Australia will compete with Serbia in the quarterfinal and will try to win the match in order to enter the semi-final.
