  1. I only have one reason...

Australia realised early that the US implementation of policy in Vietnam would not lead to peace.

All stemmed from poor US policy - including the unpopularity of the war on the home front

  2. A. Australia had been in conflict somewhere in the world since the end of WWII to 1973.

    B. Gradual troop reduction was due in part to the war becoming more and more socially unacceptable, and beginning to cause uproar.

    C. The Australians effective tactics against the Viet Cong were outspoken by the United States' less-patient tactics.

    D. Increasing United States troops meant less Australian Troops would be needed.

    E. The Michael Matteson Handcuff Incident

    F. Whitham Labor Gov't effectively pulled the last of the Aussies out.

  3. Like the current Iraq conflict America lied to a gullible Australian Prime Minister and used the "domino" theory to "prove " that commies were a threat to all freedom loving nations.

Ho Chi Mihn was actually a Nationalist ..not a communist

The actual trigger was a lie called the "Gulf of Tonkin incident " where an American warship was "harrased " by "possibly " NVA powerboats ...go figure that one.

But still Harold " I will f%$#@ anything on two legs but can't swim very well " Holt wanted to go all the way with LBJ.

So Australia called up a new form of Lotto called conscription and filled the army with thousands of young men who went to fight in a country they had never even heard of against an enemy they knew little about.

Australia went to war and sent young men into Vietnam.

Australians fought well and the Battle of Long tan was our most remembered moment.

At Long Tan a company of soldiers stood against 2 divisions of NVA regular soldiers and held out.

This created a new respect for Australians and the NVA rarely operated in Aussie territory after that.

Australians were so respected that they were the first non Asians to be allowed to go back into Vietnam, it took the US nearly 10 more years before they were allowed to set foot in Vietnam again.

Interestingly we call this the Vietnam war..the Vietnamese call it "the American War"
