  1. Hee hee, the old language problem.

School (US) = university in Aus

    College (US) = school here

Semester = term (we have four)

Freshman, sophomore (I believe you spelt it wrong) = first, second year

    Different than = different from

Where are you at? = Where are you/what stage are you up to? (depending on context)

    Class 2011 = ???

Our academic year starts in January or February.

  2. ok a few things

all australian educational institutions follow the calendar year. so universities start the year in early march, and finish in november. we dont have freshmen and sophomores, its just first, second, third year students etc. the uni year is split into 2 semesters (its now currently the semester break. second semester starts in a few weeks). im also the class of 2011. so my degree will be handed to me in november 2011

the person above me got a few things mixed up. college in the US is called university here. the 4 terms she was talking about refers to primary (years K-6) and high school (7-12). uni's follow the 2 semesters. Primary and high school start in early Feb, and uni's in early march because placements are still being organised until the end of Feb.

  3. School starts in August and in college classes start in August too.

  4. Australian universities are currently on their mid-year break. Our university year begins late Feb./early March and ends in November. I think sophomore equates to what we call Second Year. I'm not sure though what class 2011 means exactly. Is that the year you will graduate? Or does it mean something else?

In my state (Queensland), most 2nd year uni students would turn 19 some time during the year (keeping in mind that our uni year coincides with the calendar year).

    EDIT:

I'm in Brisbane and the dates I have given are for Queensland. In Queensland, we have 2 university semesters per year. Semester 1 finished a couple of weeks ago.

    PS:

Iv'e looked into the date question and universities throughout Australia are much the same as Queensland Unis. Other answerers are evidently confusing uni semester dates with K-12 dates which are very different and not relevant to university.

  5. i am in perth and the start of the year is in february ..it's very different here. I am use to the Canadian school system which is a lot like the USA so it makes it easier but here it's so different but you will love it here!!
