Australia secures Federation Cup World Group place at the expense of Germany – Tennis News
World class team of Germany featuring the likes of three Top-20 players was ousted by the Aussie underdogs, who played extremely well to steer their way into the world group and relegate the toughest team in the Federation Cup.
World number five, Samantha Stosur, set the tone for the Aussie team by defeating the in-form 14th ranked, Angelique Kerber, in the first rubber. It was followed by the major upset; Jarmila Gajdosova outclassed the 21st
ranked contestant, Julia Georges, in straight sets to give her country a resounding lead of 2-0 on the first day.
Germany had never made a comeback in the Federation Cup after going down 0-2 at the start. It required them to create new history on Sunday by winning all three rubbers matches to stay in the World Group.
Kerber defeated Olivia Rogowska in the fourth rubber and the team of Goerges and Petkovic sealed the second win by defeating Casey Dellacqua and Gajdosova in the doubles category; however, the Aussie triumph was already sealed
by the big number five, Stosur, who crushed Petkovic in straight sets to confirm the win for her country in the third rubber clash.
“I was prepared not to play at all but I knew as of yesterday evening, and I prepared myself as well as possible, but unfortunately it wasn’t my day today.” Petkovic stated after the clash. She further added, “I really enjoyed
the [crowd’s] support, but I definitely felt the pressure. Of course, you expect a comeback with maybe a little less pressure than Fed Cup, but I’m always expect nothing less than to win, so that was really disappointing,” The tie was played on the home soil
of Germany and it was expected that they will easily bounce over the Aussie players but upsets happen.
The winning team lead, Stosur stated, “I’ve played well. I’ve won my second match in straight sets, and to put the team through to the World Group again is a really nice feeling.” Aussie team was prepared to have a big bash after
securing the next year’s World Group squad and plonking the most versatile team of the world. They had a big dinner on Sunday night and rocked the dance floors until the early morning. All players are party girls from Australia and this win asked for such
a massive celebration.
Germany, on the other hand, will be extremely disappointed but they should learn the lesson from this and play well, next year.
