Australia should not rush into playing Pat Cummins in Tests, recommends http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Geoffrey-Francis-Lawson-c58815 - Cricket News Update
Geoffrey Lawson, former Test cricketer, has advised Australian selectors to show some patience with young pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Iftikhar-Ali-Khan-Pataudi-Nawab-of-c64075 Cummins and should not rush into playing the 18-year-old in Test matches.
Lawson is of the view that Cummins is not yet ready to endure the pressure of Test cricket and should play more First-Class games before making it into the national squad. The former cricketer believes that this is the best way
to go about with the young sensation.
The 53-year-old termed the pacer as a rare talent that needs some time to develop both physically and mentally. Lawson holds true that Cummins will get quicker as he gets older.
Recommending that Cummins should not be played against South Africa in Tests, Lawson said, “We know he can bowl fast and do lots of things but his body's got to get used to not just long days, but long games and long seasons. He's
likely to do that quicker than anybody. You've just got to be a bit patient with him. You know he's going to make it sooner rather than later.”
Cummins has been named in the 15-man squad for Tests and this does not go well with Lawson, who is in contention for chairman of selectors after Andrew Hilditch's reign comes to an end.
The 53-year-old believes that the Cummins was selected merely for his performance in the past few games and should have earned his place by scaling wickets at the domestic level.
“That doesn't really say pick me to play Test cricket. The Australian Test team is not a development squad. You pick the best players to play international cricket for Australia. Years ago you would have said that's fantastic talent,
go out and play and get people out and earn your spot in the team,” said Lawson.
Cummins has been the centre of discussion in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 ever since making it to the squad. The right-arm pacer is the youngest cricketer to sign a contract with Cricket Australia; he is also the youngest to play an ODI and T20 for
the national team.
Cummins had a dream start to his ODI career on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, against the Proteas. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757’s star cricketer, was Cummins' first ODI victim and the pacer finished the match with figures of 3 for
28.
Lawson is convinced that the 18-year-old is a long-term prospect but currently he should let his body grow so it can undergo the hectic international schedule.
