Australia to abolish split-innings in limited overs domestic tournament
The Playing Conditions Committee (PCC) of Cricket Australia (CA)has suggested the board that the innovative idea of split-innings should not be used in this year’s domestic limited overs tournament after the Kangaroo’s World Cup success that has pleased
the fans to a great extent.
Australia introduced many innovations in last year’s domestic ODI tournament in order to draw maximum public attention, the most prominent was the use of split-innings.
As per the split-innings formula, a 50-over innings was divided into two or three small innings.
The idea proved to very successful and the cricket lovers appreciated it much. But the PCC thinks that the experiment  is not needed this year as the fans are already much happy with their team’s World Cup performance and they do not need any incentive to
show interest in the event.
Moreover, the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) is not likely to allow any changes in the 50-over game before the next edition of the tournament.
However, the PCC has recommended to continue the other innovations like using a different ball by each team and ending overs ceiling for bowlers.
The committee chairman, Jack http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, told the local media today, “Overall, the public response to innovations, which were trialled to test ways of refreshing the 50-over format, was good and the public said it liked the split innings.”
But he said, “But on split innings, the PCC today noted its public popularity, but decided to ask the full CA board to note that the 50-over format will continue to be used for the next ICC Cricket World Cup and to therefore consider having the Ryobi Cup
revert to a 50-over format next summer.”
Established in 1969, the domestic tournament, which is also known as Ryobi One Day Cup, contains eight First Class teams including Canberra, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865.
However, for 2010-11 season, the CA has decided to increase the number of squad members to 12 and reduce the number of overs to 45.
On the other hand, some analysts suggest that the abolishing the split-innings format may distract the public interest and thus the tournament may lose its worth.
