Australia upsets Russia in Women’s Water Polo: Preliminary round Group B – London Olympic Games
Australia upsets Russia in the preliminary round of Group ‘B’ Women’s Water Polo match on day seven of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Friday, August 3.
The Australian team remained dominant over their opponents from the start of the four-quarter game, as they showered their expertise in the first quarter. They scored six goals in the first round while Russian players were able to notch up only four goals.
With their continued efforts in the second quarter, Australia moved up on the scorecard by achieving two goals while Russia was able to score just one goal, and the score went up to 8-5 after the first half.
The third quarter saw gruelling efforts of Russian squad, which managed to block all attempts of Australian team and scored one goal in the third quarter. Nevertheless, the Australian players elevated their efforts in the fourth quarter, where they answered
two-goals accomplishment of Russia by notching three goals, making the score 11-8 after the game.
On the other hand, Italy defeated Great Britain in a comfortable manner. The Italian team showed no mercy to their opponents in the 32-minute game, as they took a lead of 4-2 over British squad in the first quarter.
With their persistent efforts, the Italian team scored two goals in the second quarter while Great Britain managed to improve their score by just one goal and the first half concluded with a 6-3 effort from both sides.
The same continued in third quarter, where Great Britain once again scored a single goal only while Italy moved up on the scorecard with two scores. With their smothering efforts in the final quarter, Italy once again accomplished two goals and overpowered
Great Britain’s single goal effort, enjoying a commendable 10-5 win in the match.
Tania di Mario and Giulia Enrica Emmolo of Italy scored three goals each for their team and played a vital part in the victory.
Furthermore, the audience enjoyed gruelling efforts of all water polo players in the match while Great Britain will compete with Spain in the next round.
