Australia used to be so clean everywhere. What happened ?

I remember the "do the right thing" campaign many years ago.

It was great, the streets were clean and there was no trash dumped in front of unit buildings.

I look around now and notice in several suburbs there are mountains of peoples garbage on the side walk, including mattresses and coffee tables, boxes of actual rubbish etc..

I miss the good old days when people respected our country.

Who is doing this and why ?

  1. I remember that campaign too. People seemed to take responsibility for their rubbish then. Now, the attitude seems to be "no-one else is binning their litter or taking it home - why should I bother?" Graffiti is tolerated too, in a way that never used to happen. It seems to be a sad fact of life that the standards which people like you and I try to uphold are no longer valued. You get the feeling that what is an eyesore to us is invisible to the litter-droppers!

Mind you, some suburbs have regular clean-up weeks where unwanted stuff can be left out for the local council to remove. It's possible you could have witnessed the end of one of those weeks, just before the council came to collect all the stuff left on the sidewalk!

Anyway, we'll keep on being tidy and picking up stray litter, won't we?

  2. it is the people attitude that will turn our beautiful cities to  slums, it is also the councils responsibility to maintain the cities.

  3. I live in the intercity (Sydney)so I never see this. When I lived in Maroubra  the Randwick council every six months would come and remove bulk rubbish that was piled in front of houses. I not sure what you might have seen was placed out for one of these council bulk collections or people just aren't respecting the do the right thing in our country anymore by dumping trash on the footpath.

  4. The coucil have gone soft...

The fines for this are still in place, they are ust not enforced anymore...

The rights that tenants have outweigh the rights the neighbours have...

It is disgusting and I hate going through Housing Commission areas...

It is Low income, drug abusing, unemployed or retired (With no help) citizens that don't care how their community looks...

I don't know how they do it as it is not hard to buy some plants and do a nice garden...

It is not hard to put things in the rubbish....

Tips should always be free and should even have a pick up more regularly than just the local council pick up...

There is alot of things that the council will not pick up...

Life has got much more hectic these days and to keep up with it means less times for issues at home...It is sad and everyone pays for it one way or another...

With technology they way it is everyone is looking for an easy way out of cleaning up and in truth there just is not a way apart from getting off their as*es and doing it themselves...

    I blame MTV....lol
