Australia v New Zealand: 2nd Test – day-2 Recap
Bowlers continued to be dominant in the second Test between Australia and New Zealand at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart in Australia on Saturday, December 10, 2011.
A total of 12 wickets fell on day two, as the bowlers got the ball to seam and swing significantly.
Yesterday was the same story, as 11 wickets fell. Things could have been worse had there been a complete day’s play, but weather in Hobart was not good for cricket.
However, conditions improved today, as the sun was out for most of the day and there was no chance of rain.
Despite the improvement in weather conditions, pitch remained bowling friendly, which was a very good sign for the Kiwi bowlers.
Australia had lost opener Phil Hughes in the closing moments of day one and started the day with 12 runs on the board.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729 were the overnight not-out batsmen. They started the day with high hopes today, but were unable to make an impression.
The former was the first one to be dismissed today after adding 15 runs to the total. He was followed by veteran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377, who managed just five runs in an unimpressive outing.
Next to go was Khawaja, who stayed at the crease for a very long time, but scored only seven runs from 51 deliveries.
Middle-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Haddin-c1170, who managed five runs in his short stay at the crease.
There was some resistance from the Aussie skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Doug-Bracewell-c1394.
With the wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, the Kangaroos were struggling at 75/7 and looked to be bowled out below 100.
However, Peter Siddle put up a brave show towards the end of the innings, scoring 36 runs with the help of three boundaries. His effort guided the team to 136 runs in the end, 14 less than New Zealand’s first innings total.
The Kiwi seamers enjoyed the lively conditions in Hobart, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CS-Martin-c1295 and Bracewell picked up three wickets each.
New Zealand started their second innings steadily, as openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980 put on 36 runs for the first wicket. They were unable to make most of the start to their respective outings and were dismissed for 12 and 16.
However, the innings was put together by skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JD-Ryder-c1679. The pair scored 37 runs for the third wicket partnership before the latter was sent back to the pavilion after adding 16 runs to the total.
This did not trouble the tourists by much, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KS-Williamson-c1813 put together an unbeaten 66-run stand before the day came to an end.
At stumps on day two, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 reached 139 runs for the loss of three wickets with an overall lead of 153 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Pattinson-c1653 managed to bag one wicket each.
