After two humiliating Twenty20 defeats, the Australian side bounced back and sealed a convenient seven-wicket victory over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, in the first One Day International (ODI), played at Pallekele Cricket Stadium, Kandy, on Wednesday, August 10, 2011.
The left-arm fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WU-Tharanga-c2802 and Tillakaratne Dilshan,
put together 54 runs for the first-wicket-stand.
However, the collapse began when Dilshan went back to the pavilion in the 13th over. The wickets continued to go down afterwards as Johnson troubled the islanders with both pace and swing.
As a result, the Lankan batting went all out on 191 after 41. 1 overs. In reply, it was a straightforward triumph for the tourists, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 and the captain Michael Clarke, hit half-centuries, powering their side to the target in the
39th over.
While http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 expressed his delight over playing a key role in his team’s much-needed success, Dilshan held his batsmen responsible for an embarrassing loss.
"This was not a 190 wicket. We did not bat well and our shot selection was not good. I think our spinners bowled well, but they did not have runs to defend," said Dilshan.
On the other hand, Clarke, who shared a 101-run partnership with the veteran Ponting, was pleased to see his side back on the winning ways.
"The wicket was fantastic. It was dry but held together better than I expected. It is important that I lead from the front and it is great having Ponting at number three with all that experience at the other end," uttered the Aussie skipper, who scored unbeaten
53 off 78 balls.
While the second encounter of the five-match series is set to be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota, on Sunday, August 14, 2011, both skippers aim to produce good results in the next clash.
