http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nathan-Michael-Lyon-c78822 in the first of the three-match Test series at the Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Thursday, September 1, 2011.
The hosts were all out for 105 runs in their first outing, conceding a first innings lead of 168 runs until tea on day-two. Only four batsmen in the innings managed to reach double figures with a highest score of 29 from opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/NT-Paranavitana-c2132.
Earlier, the Australian team managed 273 runs in their first innings. Most batsmen struggled to cope up with the conditions, but star middle-order player http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MEK-Hussey-c1942 played exceptionally well, scoring 95 runs before being dismissed.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978, the Australian skipper, won the toss and decided to bat first on a dry pitch. He expected the wicket to deteriorate with the passage of time and expected his team to make most of the conditions in the earlier stages of the match.
Batting first certainly proved to be a better option, as the hosts struggled to cope up with the disciplined bowling line-up of the Kangaroos on the second day’s play.
Sri Lanka would have expected a solid start from openers Paranavitana and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691, but the latter failed to make an impression. He got out after adding just 4 runs to the total.
The middle-order of the team consisted of some experienced players like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TT-Samaraweera-c2712. However, the trio failed to live up to the expectations of their fans, getting out cheaply for 10, 11 and 26 respectively.
Sri Lanka’s lower-order seemed to have no clue of the accurate bowling from the opposition’s spinner Lyon, who ended up with a five-wicket haul in his first international outing for Australia.
Apart from Lyon, all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 also did a decent job, picking up three wickets in the innings.
Another debutant for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808. He was also involved in the important run out of Jayawardene, which
changed the complexion of the game completely.
