Australia v Sri Lanka – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 tour of Australia (1st Test) – Live Cricket Score and Match Update – Welegedara denies Hughes century
Despite the regular fall of wickets, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s first Test against Sri Lanka, being played at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart today on December 14, and got the team up to 193 for 3 by tea. However,
directly at the start of the final session, Lankan seamer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/UWMBCA-Welegedara-c2735 succeeded in dislodging the young left-hander, 14 runs short of what could have been his fourth Test century.
Having been drafted into the side to fill the number 3 position left vacant after the retirement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 having consequently been moved down to number 4, Hughes appeared to have slipped right into his role, and remained firm
as three wickets fell by tea. His dismissal, however, saw the hosts at 198 for 4, with the pressure having increased significantly on Australia’s middle order.
While the wicket was a green-tinged affair, it did not appear to offer the seamers much to go on, with Chanaka Welegedara being the only bowler who managed to pick up wickets. However, the surface holds plenty of potential for the batsmen, and Australia
will be looking to exploit that and rack up a sizeable first innings total.
The match kicked off with the hosts winning the toss and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ranaweera-Mudiyanselage-Shaminda-Eranga-c83939 at mid-on
in the 6th over.
Hughes (86) was the next batsman to step up to the crease, and he teamed up with Warner for a 79-run second-wicket partnership. Both batsmen appeared to have settled down for what the home team must have hoped would be a prolonged partnership – however,
the last over before lunch resulted in a mix up which saw Warner run out by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913.
Coming in at number four, Watson (30) got a promising start, in addition to teaming up with Hughes for an 86-run stand. The 49th over witnessed a close shave, with Hughes caught behind off a no-ball on 77 – however, Welegedara made up for the
missed opportunity by dismissing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 taking a spectacular one-handed catch.
Clarke (8*) was the next batsman to step up to the crease, but shortly after tea, Welegedara intervened to deprive the Aussies of the driving force behind their innings, and sent Hughes packing in the 59th over. While 198 for 4 is not a position
the home team must have hoped to be in after having chosen to bat, the tourists still have to contend with Australia’s formidable middle order, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 at the crease.
