Australia vs. Germany: Australian manager Holger Osieck reveals he was shocked yet delighted over Germany win
Australian team manager Holger Osieck said he was delighted with his side’s performance in the International Friendly against Germany. The former Assistant Manager of the German National team admitted he was not expecting it and the result had left him stunned.
Australia defeated Germany at the Borussia-Park in Monchengladbach to end their seven match unbeaten streak in all competitions, with a 2-1 score line. The Socceroos were 1-0 down in the first-half courtesy a Mario Gomez goal and came back strongly after the interval to score two goals in a matter of three minutes to go in lead. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luke-Wilkshire-c22937 were the goal scorers.
The German insisted that he was left stunned by the impressive comeback from his side. He added that taking on Germany was a huge challenge and the Australian side had to give the best they had, which they did. Osieck said that winning against Die Mannschaft away was a great achievement and the players should be proud of the brilliant performance.
“Even I had not expected it. I have great respect for the German team, it was a big challenge for us. Our goal was to perform well and give a good account of ourselves,” the coach was quoted as saying.
The tactician acknowledged his team and hailed the second-half performance. He hailed the determination of the team and hoped his side would gain a lot of confidence from this win. Although he admitted that the Australians were not good enough in the first-half and were lucky that the score-line was 1-0.
“We had not thought of such a result. I must say for the sake of fairness, that in the first half we had some weak points. We improved considerably in the second half,” Holger Osieck concluded.
Australia was able to avenge their embarrassing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Germans in last year’s World Cup in South Africa.
The Socceroos were runners-up in this year’s AFC Asian Championship and lost to Japan in extra-time. The match ended 0-0 in 90 minutes and Tadanari Lee’s goal in the 109th minute proved to be the decider.
