Australia wins Men’s and Women’s relay titles: Day one –2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Australian relay teams overwhelmed the efforts of other squads in the Women’s 4*100m freestyle and Men’s 4*100m medley relay respectively, on the primary day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games. The event took place on September 9 at Isle of Man.
The Australian team captured the title of Women’s relay in a marvellous time of 3 minutes and 41.57 seconds. Their superb effort was nearly four seconds ahead of the relay team of England, which occupied the silver medal of the event with a nice timing of 3 minutes and 45.05 seconds. The third finishing spot of the relay discipline was obtained by Wales, whose swimmers posted a nice time of 3 minutes and 46.99 seconds for the bronze medal.
The gold winning squad highlighted the outperforming efforts of Ami Matsuo, Adelaide Hart, Kotuku Ngawati and Leah Neale, where Matsuo was the fastest leg of her team, as she completed her sprint in 54.37 seconds.
Nevertheless, the fourth position was secured by Scotland’s squad, which clocked a time of 3 minutes and 50.69 seconds. They were followed by South African squad, which remained only 0.28 seconds behind the team of Scotland and ended their swim with a timing of 3 minutes and 50.97 seconds. Meanwhile, relay team of New Zealand obtained sixth position, by reporting a time of 3 minutes and 58.56 seconds.
Moments later, the Australian male swimmers dominated the Men’s medley relay, by reporting in a wonderful effort of 3 minutes and 38.68 seconds. They were followed by the Scottish relay squad, which claimed the silver medal of the swim by producing a time of 3 minutes and 41.50 seconds. Likewise, the South African team remained almost five second behind Scotland and earned third position of the event, with a timing of 3 minutes and 46.13 seconds.
In this meet, the Australian squad displayed the dominating swims of Robert Gerlach, Tommy Sucipto, Chris Raven and Te Haumi Maxwell. The fourth position of the event was secured by England, as its’ swimmers submitted a time of 3 minutes and 47.71 seconds. The English squad was only 0.04 seconds ahead of their following team, New Zealand, whose swimmers posted a combined effort of 3 minutes and 47.75 seconds for fifth position.
In addition, the session concluded after the completion of all scheduled swimming events, while the winners were invited on the victory stand to collect awards and accolades for their notable swims after the completion of the meet.
