Australian Amateur Tour moves to South Asian Amateur Classic in Adelaide – Golf news
Next up on the Australian Men’s Amateur Tour is the South Australian Amateur Classic scheduled to start this week at the scenic Glenelg Golf Club, Adelaide. The event will boost a stellar field full of Australian Amateur talent, with nine of the top 20 Australian
amateur players and some 15 out of the top 20 Australian players.
Matt Stieger, after a long and disappointing week at the Mandurah Easter Amateur Championship, will be part of the field and although not in a winning spree at the moment, the young golfer has all the talent to torment his opponents. Apart from his lacklustre
performance at Mandurah, Stieger has outplayed most of his amateur competitors several times including the Tasmanian Open and Australian Amateur Championships. Stieger also went on to win the Western Australian Amateur Championship and finished runners up
to Nathan Holman at the Riversdale Cup.
Melbourne based Kalem Richardson will be participating in the event with renewed motivation after his top ten finish at the Mandurah. He was among the only eight players who were able to break par in the tournament. Richardson had also recorded top ten finishes
at Master of Amateurs and the Tasmanian open.
Jordan Zunic was among the few players who performed majestically in the final round at Mandurah with eight-under. He finished tied for third along with Stieger and Geoff Drakewood.
20-year-old Brett Drewitt, currently ranked 51st in the Amateur rankings, is one of the most promising Australian golfers to have come out in recent years. Drewitt was the only Australian who won an International title at the 109th Pacific Northwest
Amateur Championship at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia. He overtook the American Cory Renfrew in the Match Play with a decisive score of 4&3. Drewitt is the defending champion at the Queensland Amateur Championship which will also starts
off this week, in direct collision with the SA Amateur. Drewitt has opted to play at the SA Amateur rather than defending his title at the QA Championship.
New South Wales State representative, Lincoln Tighe, will also be one formidable contender at the tournament. He qualified for the British Amateur in 2009 and finished tied for second at the 2011 State Medal. Moore Park’s Penant Flag win at the Sydney Metropolitan
Penant Series in 2011, owed much to the stellar performance of Tighe when he successfully overcame a tough batch of golfers.
Rory Burke, Geoff Drakeford, Brody Ninyette and Daniel Bringolf are some of the other players at the event who have performed well in the current season and all of them finished in the top 15 in last week’ Mandurah Challenge. The halfway cut will be forged
at the end of the second round on Friday with the top 36 plus ties proceeding to the third round.
