Australian Barbarians upset Brazil in water polo: Day four – 2012 Women’s Pan Pacs, Melbourne
Australian Barbarians have proved their talent by upsetting Brazil in its fourth water polo game on day four of the 2012 Women’s Pan Pacs at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), on Wednesday, January 11.
Brazil has played three matches in the tournament so far, but it has failed to secure victory in any of them. On the other hand, Barbarians pocketed their first win of the competition and they are now ranked fifth on the overall rankings list.
The Barbarians smothered their opponent with a vicious start, where they scored two goals in first quarter while Brazil failed to show any development on their scorecard. Unlike the first quarter, the Brazilian team corroborated its performance and scored two goals in the start of second quarter.
The gruelling effort of Brazilians failed to bring much harm to their opponents, as Barbarians answered with three consecutive goals, but it strengthened their possibility to win. After the first half, the score remained 5-2, with Barbarians in the lead.
Nevertheless, the picture got clearer in third round, where Barbarians demonstrated their strangling efforts and scored three goals once again. In contrast, Brazil responded with just one goal in the third round. The Barbarians extended their lead to five goals after the third quarter, as the score went to 8-3.
Almost the same continued in the final round, where Barbarians successfully dictated terms to their competitors. Yet again, they scored two goals while Brazil’s squad remained lucky enough to pass the ball in their opponent’s cage. The Barbarians made no mistake and ensured their victory by controlling the ball until the end of the game.
Genevieve Venosta of Barbarians emerged as the highest goal scorer of the match, as she scored three goals in the game.
The Barbarians are now set to compete with the toughest team of the tournament, Australia in their next match. Australia has not tasted defeat in the tournament so far and they have crushed all their opponents in an easy manner.
Furthermore, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled matches while the championship will conclude on January 14 after the completion of all games.
