  1. The rules behind the AFL forming a top eight is solely to create more finals games to enable the AFL to make more money from the paying public - but mainly for Channels 7 & 10 to make more money.

    It's as simple as that.

  2. The top eight teams are ranked according to the number of games they have won throughout the season, and the margins they have won their games by, or lost by (%).

In the first week of finals, first position plays fourth position, and second and third play against each other. Nobody is eliminated from these games, as the top four teams earn a double chance.

Fifth position plays eighth, and sixth and seventh play each other. The losers of these two matches are eliminated from the finals series.

And it goes on and on and on in the weeks after that!

  3. Well how the top 8 is formed is so simple anyone should know it.

(As you obviously have no idea, it is by the number of games won, and the % of points scored for and against.)

How the teasm are selected to play each other during the H and A season is anyones guess this year, the AFL really made a dogs breakfast of the draw.

  4. Week 1

    Qualifying Finals:

    QF1: 1 (home ground) v 4

    QF2: 2 (home ground) v 3

    Elimination Finals:

    EF1: 5 (home ground) v 8

    EF2: 6 (home ground) v 7

    ---------

    Week 2

Semi Finals (2nd chances for loosing top 4 teams)

    SF1: loser of QF1 (home ground) v winner EF1

    SF2: loser of QF2 (home ground) v winner EF2

    ---------

    Week 3

    Preliminary Finals (the crossover)

    PF1: winner QF1 (home ground) v winner SF2

    PF2: winner QF2 (home ground) v winner SF1

    ---------

    Week 4

    Grand Final at the MCG

    winner PF1 v winner PF2

  5. The top eight is determined by wins and losses (obviously the teams with more wins are toward the top and the teams with not many wins toward the other half of the ladder, the bottom) and if i a team and another time are tied on the same amount of wins losses draws - their percentage seperates them. the percentage shows stuff like accuracy infront of goal and basically how accurate the team is during the game, the higher the percentage the higher the team can go on the ladder.
