Australian GP boss Ron Walker says they will pull out of Formula 1 if V6 engines used for 2014
Australian Grand Prix owner Ron Walker has stated that the Formula 1 sport will lose everything if the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) proposed V6 turbo engines plan goes ahead from the 2014 Formula 1 season.
Ron further added that the Australian Formula 1 race will be dropped if V6 turbo engines are used for the 2014 season which are going to compromise the sound of the engines.
Ron stated that if Formula 1 teams gamble on V6, they will suffer big time as Australia will not afford a race that year.
“If the teams want to have a brawl over this they are going to get the biggest brawl of their life. They won't be able to introduce the engine because we won't run the engine, we won't run the races. An IndyCar race costs about US$3.5million, compared to
what we are paying and it is louder and noisy,” commented Ron.
He further added that he proposed the FIA to stand firm on the current technology which is more famous among fans.
“I told them that the circuits would not run it. The sound is part of the brand. It must be 18,000 revs and it must sound the same. We are not going to have our customer base destroyed,” stated Ron.
Initially, the FIA decided to bring V4’s into Formula 1 sport which faced huge criticism from teams and officials. However, the Formula 1 teams have agreed on the V6 engines to be introduced for the 2014 season instead of V4’s that were proposed by the FIA.
Ron becomes the second person who has voiced in favour of Formula 1 engine sound. Previously, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone stated that the Formula 1 car voice is the biggest attraction for the fans and stepping down from V8 engines in the name of
cost cutting and environmental issues will not be of any use.
The 2011 season continues in Silverstone but it will be interesting to see how the other Formula 1 stakeholders react to this engine change.
