Australian Karrie Webb blazes to big win at LPGA Founders Cup – Golf update
Australia’s Karrie Webb in continuation of her winning streak won the LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix when Brittany Lincicome bogeyed her chances of forging a playoff. Webb, who lagged behind by no less than six shots before the beginning of the final round
came from behind on the final day, taking over the first round leaders Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer and Lincicome. Stanford, who had a brilliant day in the opening round, was not able to keep up with the expectations.
Webb stated, “It's my third win here in Phoenix, I love coming out to the desert and I hope to be playing out here and have a tournament for many years to come out here.”
Lincicome chipped 10 feet past the hole and eventually bogeyed. It was her second bogey in the 54 holes. A frustrated Lincicome did not appreciate her performance for the day, "Chipping is something I've struggled with my whole entire life, so it doesn't
surprise me that chip didn't work out too well," she said.
LPGA Founders Cup being a charity tournament, Webb now has a share of the $200,000 that she will direct to the charity foundations of her choice. She will be splitting the sum between two different causes, of which one part will go to the Christopher Reeve
Spinal Cord Injury and paralysis foundation and the other part going to the Japan relief funds.
Webb said, "It's such a great honor to win this tournament I couldn't be more honored to win an event, because I wouldn't have had the career that I've had and the life that I've had if it weren't for those 13 women.”
The LPGA Founders Cup sponsored by RR Donnelley was created in homage to the 13 pioneers of the LPGA among whom Marilynn Smith, Louise Suggs and Shirley Spork witnessed the final round. The purse of $1 million is to be distributed among various charity
causes, with $500,000 going to the LPGA foundation and the rest will be distributed to the designated choice of the top ten winners. Other Aussies participating in the tournament were Sarah-Jane Smith who finished at 10th place and Lindsey Wright
at 43rd.
