Australian Matt Stieger wins the Western Australian Amateur Championship - Golf news
Australia’s prize amateur golfer, Matt Stieger’s winning streak continued in the Western Australian Amateur Championship when he defeated Ray Chow in the first Playoff hole at Melville Glades Golf Club. This was Stieger’s third victory for the year after
winning the Australian Amateur Championship and Tasmanian Amateur Open.
Stieger has improved in his sport with leaps and bounds and was ranked Number 19 on the World Amateur Golf Rankings before the tournament and must have closed in on the top ten after this win. “I’m swinging it the best that I’ve done now for a while,” said
Stieger following the victory.“I’m a feel player, yet my coach John [Serhan] back at St Michael’s Golf Club in Sydney is more a technical coach and the combination is working well.”
Chow proved to be a tough challenge for Stieger as the match remained equally poised until the Playoff hole. Chow gained an early lead at the fourth but Stieger bounced back to all square the fifth. It remained all square until the 11th. Chow
was 1-up at the end of first nine holes and by the time they were at 19th, Chow had gained a 2-shot lead. Stieger, then launched to reclaim the lead and with Chow claiming the 34th and 35th, the match was extended to the extra
holes.
“It wasn’t the start that I was after,” said Stieger. “I felt frustrated a little, as I was striking the ball well, yet was’t scoring. I kind of felt that I was the only one out there today going for me as Ray had a lot of supporters being local.”
The young Aussie has done marvelously well for himself and although he was not able to win the Riversdale Cup where he lost to Nathan Holman on the third-Playoff hole, he bounced back to beat Ben Campbell of New Zealand in the Australian Amateur Championship
at Victoria Golf Club.
Stieger has now set his eyes on the US Amateur circuit and is hopeful that his winning streak will continue on the other side of the Pacific. He has made a strong mark in the amateur circuit both locally and internationally, and is all set to take Aussie
golf to an altogether different level.
