Australian Open 2011: Andy Murray and David Ferrer breeze into round four
Still without a Grand Slam win, 2010 finalist Andy Murray hopes to go a step further at the Australian Open 2011.
In his attempts to win the title, Murray sailed into the fourth round without breaking a sweat.
Appearing for the sixth time at the event, Murray extended his career win-loss mark at the event to 15-5 after he successfully dismissed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Murray had earlier enjoyed a comfortable victory over Karol Beck and then a straight sets victory
over Illya Marchenko.
Meeting for the second time on the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour, Murray was able to extend his head-to-head lead to 2-0 after he defeated the Spaniard in almost two hours.
Breaking Lopez’s serve in the very first game, Murray was able to rush into a 3-0 lead. Allowing the loss of only a single game, the Brit was able to secure the first set within thirty minutes. Coming into the second set, Murray was again able to secure
a landslide lead rushing to 5-0 before wrapping up the second set 6-1. Enjoying a 2-0 lead in the set score, Murray maintained his form in the third set and clinched it 6-2 to complete his straight sets win over the Spaniard.
Joking about the match Murray said, “It was a lot easier than the scoreline suggests,” before correcting, “Sorry, it was a lot harder than the score line suggests.”
The British number one struck ten aces and converted six of ten break points to move into the fourth round of the event. Murray will next play either Jurgen Melzer or Marcos Baghdatis.
Joining Murray in the second round is the seventh seed, David Ferrer. Meeting Richard Berankis for their third round match, Ferrer secured his eighth straight win in 2011.
Ferrer succeeded in breaking Berankis’ serve in the third game of the first set after three deuces, though he got his serve broken in the next game to keep the score tied at 2-2.
However, hitting his top form, Ferrer won the next four games to secure the first set 6-2. Following suit in the second set, Ferrer won it 6-2 before wrapping up the match by taking the third set.
Ferrer will play Canadian qualifier Milos Raonic in the next round.
