Australian Open 2011: Caroline Wozniacki, Justine Henin and Victoria Azarenka move ahead
In an attempt to clinch her first Grand Slam title, world number one and top seed Caroline Wozniacki moved ahead in the Australian Open on Wednesday after sailing through her second round match against the American, Vania King.
Competing for the fourth straight year at the event, Wozniacki has never made it past the fourth round. Her 2010 run at the event was stopped by eventual semi-finalist Li Na in the fourth round.
A top seed at the event, Wozniacki was criticised for occupying the top seed position without holding any Grand Slam title. But after brushing aside Aleksandra Wozniak in the first round, Wozniacki was geared up for the second match.
Without breaking a sweat, the Dane opened serve and rushed into the lead to secure a breadstick win before wrapping up her straight sets victory with a bagel set win in the second set. Wozniacki will play either Alberta Brianti or Dominika Cibulkova in the
third round.
Joining Wozniacki in the third round is the 2010 finalist, Justine Henin. Coming from a final run at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Henin is one of the favourites to win the event.
Putting in her ninth appearance at the event, Henin has thrice made it to the final with a title win in 2004. Looking to recapture her title, Henin started her run in the event on Monday playing qualifier Sania Mirza. Surviving an early set scare, Henin
prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to meet Elena Baltacha in the second round.
Maintaining her form in the second round, Henin was quick to dismiss Baltacha in straight sets. An easy win in the first set coupled with a 6-3 victory in the second, allowed Henin to move in the third round where she will meet Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.
Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka also made it to the third round after winning her second round match against Andrea Hlavackova. Registering a twin set score of 6-4, 6-4 over the Czech, Azarenka moves ahead into the event to meet Chanelle Scheepers.
