Australian Open 2011: Novak Djokovic believes winning second major not easy
World number three Novak Djokovic of Serbia says that despite improving his game over the last three years, it will not be an easy task for him to win his second career grand slam at the Australian Open 2011, staring on Monday in Melbourne.
Djokovic, whose only grand slam triumph came at the same event in 2008, while commenting on his chances said, “I am better but now there are a lot more good players who I think have improved their games tremendously. I think Robin Soderling is playing great, Andy Murray, Nikolay Davydenko. All these guys have improved so much and then you have Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who keep on playing better and better.”
The professional tennis ace from Serbia firmly believes that his overall game has improved a great deal since winning the title back in 2008. However, he still does not rate himself highly in the presence of other top ranked players in the world.
The 23-year-old Djokovic, who turned professional back in 2003, is coming off a great season on the tour which also saw him achieve his highest career ranking of world number two in February 2010.
The right-hander reached the semi-final round at Medibank International in Sydney recently after starting the 2011 season on a low at the Brisbane International where he was upset in the opening round by Ernests Gulbis.
While commenting on his chances in the upcoming Australian Open, the Serbian said that it is pretty hard to pick the favourites as every player on the tour is playing his best tennis these days. In reply to a question regarding Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s form on the tour, he said, “They are the two best players in the world, deservedly. I guess I am in this small group of players behind them that is trying to challenge them in each event.”
