Australian Open 2011: Top twelve seeds in women’s singles – Part 2
Here is the second part highlighting the top twelve seeds on the Women Tennis Association tour for Australian Open 2011 starting in Melbourne from Monday.
7. Jelena Jankovic
The professional tennis ace from Serbia, Jelena Jankovic is currently ranked number eight in the South African Airways WTA rankings.
The right-hander, who achieved her highest career ranking of world number one back in 2008, has all the talent in the world without a shadow of doubt. However, all she lacks at the moment is her ability to focus, concentrate and play consistently on the
tour.
Jankovic, who made her debut on WTA tour back in 2000, could not go beyond the third round in Melbourne in 2010. Her fans however expect a better showing this time despite her not-so-perfect form of late.
The Serbian will take part in the Australian Open 2011 as her second WTA tournament of the season after playing at the 2011 Medibank International Sydney.
8. Victoria Azarenka
Although the 21-year-old Belarusian had a decent 2010, yet she could not go beyond the quarterfinal stage in any of the major events. In the Australian Open 2010, she was sent packing by American Serena Williams in three sets.
Therefore, the 21-year-old, who has so far won five WTA singles titles in her career, is expected to at least match her 2010 performance in Melbourne.
9. Na Li
Na Li is the highest ranked Chinese on the WTA tour at the moment and is one of the favourites to win the tournament after her brilliant semi-final run at the event in 2010.
Currently ranked number eleven in the world, Li definitely has the aptitude to make it into the final in 2011 provided she brings forth her top game. She recently won the 2011 Medibank International Sydney title, beating Kim Clijsters in straight sets.
The Chinese has already played two tournaments in 2011 and if she carries the same form in Melbourne, there is no reason why she cannot go into the final of the tournament.
10. Shahar Peer
As far as her major record in 2010 is concerned, the Israeli did not have a great year. She could not go beyond the fourth round in any of the four grand slams and considering her current form, the right-hander still has no chances to shine in Melbourne.
11. Justine Henin
The 28-year-old Belgian is certainly every tournament’s favourite as she is one of the toughest players on the WTA tour.
Seeded 11th at the Australian Open, the Belgian is coming off her final appearance at the Hopman Cup where she posted victories over Alicia Molik, Ana Ivanovic, Sesil Karatantcheva and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
12. Agnieszka Radwanska
The professional tennis star from Poland came to the limelight in 2008 with her final-eight round showings at Wimbledon as well as the Australian Open.
Since then, she has not been able to go beyond the quarterfinal stage at any grand slam, but who knows, she might upset everyone this time around.
