Australian Open 2013 cover features Sharapova, Nadal, Federer and Serena – Tennis News
Tennis Fanatics were allowed to choose the top four players for the Australian Open 2013 cover via voting and the lists are finally out. The players that have managed to secure a place in the cover of the New Year’s first Grand
Slam tournament are the second ranked Russian blonde, Maria Sharapova, who will share a picture with the 11-time Grand Slam Champion, Rafael Nadal. These two players will be on the left-hand side of the cover photo. On the right side, it will be none other
than the 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer, who will be accompanied by the second woman in the history of tennis to claim a Career Gold Slam, Serena Williams. These four players will grace the cover of the Official Program for the event.
Surprisingly, the likes of the defending champion in both categories are missing and this probably because of the legacy of all the selected players that is unmatched for the time being. Sharapova holds a Career Slam whereas the
reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, who will stage in the event as the defending champion, has just started her campaign as the top player. She has a lot to prove.
On the other hand, we have a 31-year-old American superstar, Serena Williams, who doesn’t need any introduction at all especially after a fantastic current year. She won seven titles including two Grand Slam trophies, the Wimbledon
Championships and the US Open. She has just lost six matches in the entire season and three of them were injury-forced withdrawals.
Coming to the men’s category; Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, will feature in the tournament as the defending champion for the second straight year. Last year, he managed to break apart the Spanish superhero, Rafael
Nadal, in an epic five-setter six-hour marathon to retain the title. However, he has failed to make it to the cover of the Australian Open and his place is snapped by the left-handed Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, who will be making a comeback from the knee injury
that kept him out of action ever since his second round exit at the Wimbledon Championships.
Roger Federer is the deserving player because what he has done for the game of tennis is a legendary stuff and will probably stay in the history books for another lifetime at least. He has won a record number of 17 Grand Slam titles
and still going emphatically strong at the age of 31 which deserves an immense respect.
