Australian Open Directors chooses Murray and Sharapova for the title favourites – Tennis News
New Year is just around the corner and the preparation of the Australian Open Championship is at its peak. Almost everyone from the elite players' category has returned from holiday tours and hit the practice courts to regain some
momentum before the year’s first Grand Slam Tournament gets underway. They will have a chance to warm-up their bodies in the events scheduled in Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland but everyone’s major focus is to perform well in the contest that can yield them
maximum of 2000 points.
The Tournament Director of the Australian Open, Craig Tiley, had some stunning news for the tennis fanatics. He was queried about the hot-favourite player to clinch the Australian Open and the reply was different than what everyone
thought. He picked up the third ranked Briton, Andy Murray, as the favourite in men’s category whilst the reigning French Open Champion, Maria Sharapova, was her pick in the Women Tennis Association category. Both players are world class athletes but not the
very best in the business especially the 25-year-old Russian blonde who lost to the 15-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams, in the final of the Women Tennis Association Championships in Istanbul.
Tiley stated, “I think, on the men’s side Andy Murray will be difficult to beat this year. Novak is a defending champion, he is playing great tennis, he is obviously tough to beat, but I think Andy Murray is someone who we are
going to see even more.” The prediction has definitely fumed the layer of several rumours that are gaining momentum on the social networking sites.
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, will be the Defending Champion at Melbourne and face a stern competition from the 31-year-old Swiss Maestro Roger Federer. However, this year’s US Open Champion, Andy Murray, is chosen
above both athletes and the returning 11-time Grand Slam Champion, Rafael Nadal, who will hit the courts after five months injury layoff. Not to forget that the fourth ranked Spaniard was the finalist of the last edition of the tournament and lasted for six-long
hours in the contest before bowing out to the 25-year-old Serb.
