Australian Open GP Gold: Suppanyu Avihingsanon stuns Wong Wing Ki in Men’s Singles second round
Thailand’s upcoming shuttler Suppanyu Avihingsanon surprised everyone by displaying tremendous show of his impressive skills when he defeated the higher ranked Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong in Men’s Singles second round of 2012 Australian Open GP Gold on Wednesday, April 4, in Sydney.
The un-seeded Avihingsanon, who has been placed at number 49 in the world, played to his maximum potential and overpowered the World Number 19 Wing Ki who was the eighth seed in Men’s Singles draw of Australian Open.
The spirited Thai shuttler put up gutsy performance in the match and stunned his higher ranked Hong Kong opponent in an entertaining three-set contest by consuming 66 minutes in the court.
On the other hand, Wing Ki could not dominate the pace of rallies and also failed to dictate his opponent and crashed out from the tournament.
In the first game, Avihingsanon did not let his higher ranked opponent to set up a lead as he played with wonderful aggression and managed to remain in control.
Wing Ki struggled hard to dominate the pace but failed to create gaps in his rival’s court. Both shuttlers were close in the first half.
After the break, they continued playing positive badminton without slowing down the pace of rallies. They reached at 20-20 when the Thai shuttler played attacking strokes and grabbed two consecutive points to win the set with a margin of 22-20.
In the second game, Avihingsanon again was in tremendous control and also remained close to his rival in the opening part.
However, Wing Ki geared up his speed in the ending half of second set and managed to take a small lead.
In the meanwhile, Avihingsanon could not maintain his positive run in the concluding phase and lost the second game with a score of 18-21.
In the deciding set, it was Avihingsanon who was in commanding position in the game and did not spare any chance for his opponent to get stronger. Until the break, the Thai man was ahead on the board.
After the break, Avihingsanon continued his inspiring run in the game and clinched it with an impressive 21-17 score on the board.
The Thai player won this three-set contest in 66 minutes with an interesting margin of 22-20, 18-21 and 21-17.
