Australian Open: Nguyen Tien Minh struggles against Chan Kwong Beng in Men’s Singles round-of-16
Vietnam’s ace player Nguyen Tien Minh had to work extra hard in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 encounter when he defeated the lower ranked Chan Kwong Beng of Malaysia with a tight margin at 2012 Australian Open Grand Prix Gold on Thursday, April 5, in Australia.
The fourth seeded shuttlers Tien Minh, who slipped down to number 12 in the world ranking, employed all of his skills to overpower his spirited Malaysian rival.
The higher ranked Tien Minh lost the opening game but fought back in the match by playing to his maximum potential and took the following both games to win the match in 75 minutes.
On the other hand, the lower ranked Malaysian played remarkable badminton as he surprised everyone by taking the opening set with a decent margin.
However, he failed to maintain his impressive form and lost the remaining games to his higher ranked Vietnamese rival.
In the first set, both shuttler started to play attacking badminton from the starting rallies and pushed each other in all areas of the court. However, it was the young Malaysian show put up superb show of top quality game and set up an 11-7 lead on the
board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Tien Minh tried to play aggressive badminton but failed to impress the crowd as his opponent was everywhere in the court. The higher ranked Vietnamese lost the opening game with a decent margin of 18-21.
In the following set, the match continued in the similar tight fashion as both men played positive badminton. They were quite close until the end of opening half.
Nevertheless, Tien Minh controlled the driving seat this time and started to stretch the gap. He remained quicker in the entire concluding part and won the set with a three-point margin of 21-18.
In the deciding game, Tien Minh continued his superior run in the match by playing to his full potential. He was leading the game all the way in the opening half of deciding set.
After the break, Tien Minh continued his roller-coaster run without facing any considerable opposition and won the set with a 21-12 score on the board.
Tien Minh managed pass this severe test in 75 minutes with an entertaining margin of 18-21, 21-18 and 21-12.
