Australian Open raises the champions’ prize money to $2.5 million in 2013 – Tennis News
Season-opening Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, has decided to give away record prize money to the participants of the 2013 edition. It has been officially announced that the season-opening Grand Slam tournament will pay
a record A$2.43 million ($2.5 million) to the men’s and women’s champions next season.
The tournament officials have also decided to increase the prize money for the players exiting in the initial rounds of the mega event. The most notable raise has been seen in the opening three rounds, which all have increased
to at least 30 per cent of the amount offered this year. The quarter-finalists and semi-finalists will also get 15 per cent more bucks in the upcoming Australian Open tournament.
This increase has been incorporated to facilitate the players and motivate them to struggle harder to be a part of the coveted event. The Grand Slam tournaments gather humongous revenues every year and the Australian Open officials
have decided to share their profits with the players who are the actual reason of their income.
“Our motivation is to make a major contribution toward helping ensure professional tennis players can make a decent living,” Tournament Director, Craig Tiley, delivered the official announcement. “It is a real issue and needs to
be urgently addressed throughout the sport.”
Current US Open champion, Andy Murray, has been rated as the hot favourite for Australian Open title, whilst Serena Williams was the best pick from the women’s side. However, Williams went through toes surgery this week and it
is hard to name her the favourite for the mega event. Maria Sharapova and the defending champion Victoria Azarenka are the other top contenders.
The Grand Slam of Asia Pacific will commence from the second week of January 2013 and top-rated tennis superstars will descend upon the glorious Melbourne Park to battle for the ultimate glory. Most of the players are enjoying
the off-season at present but it is not far when they will start off their gruelling practice sessions to get ready for the upcoming season. Every tennis professional has fixed eyes upon the Australian Open title but only one will stand tall amongst all the
rest.
