With the Australian Open, horseracing’s Melbourne Cup, Grand Prix at Albert Park, the traditional Boxing Day Test in cricket and AFL’s Grand Final, Melbourne can justifiably lay claim to being Australia’s sporting capital. So the city will have been chuffed to hear the news that the Australian Open will stay at Melbourne Park until at least 2036 after the announcement of $363million funds to redevelop the precinct. The redevelopment, which will see Margaret Court Arena become the third court at the complex with a retractable roof, is expected to be completed in 10-15 years.
