It’s an annual debate in the tennis fraternity: should the Australian Open be moved from its current January slot to give players a bit longer to rest and recover, then regain match-fitness before the year’s first major and hopefully avoid the baking temperatures that generally show up at some point in the tournament. The sticking point from an Australian perspective, is that the current timeslot fits neatly in with summer school holidays and that keeps the fans flocking through the turnstiles.
