American Bobby Gates has jumped into lead in second round of Australian PGA Championship underway at Hyatt Regency Coolum in Australia.
Bobby Gates who led the field alongside Andrew Buckle in the first round has once again taken the commanding position. The veteran smashed a round of 69 with the help of five birdies.
Fridays' round was not as spectacular as Thursday's. Gates teed off from the back and picked up a birdie on the first hole. The crowd roared at the initial achievement of the round that was backed by the eagle and seven birdies of the first day. However,
the veteran failed to fight the odds provided by the weather, which was windy in the morning. He missed a putt on the par-3 11th and replicated his mistake on the thirteenth and fourteenth hole. The back nine was wrapped with a score at par.
However, on his way to the front, Gates birdied the first, bogeyed the second, and eagled the third. One more birdie in the closing holes pushed the veteran into lead.
Gates walked towards the clubhouse with a frowned face and hardly stopped to sign autographs. In response to a question asked by the press Gates said, "It was tough this morning, I kind of misjudged the wind on a few shots but we battled back and on the
back nine it was playing a little tougher."
The American has taken his turn, while rest of the field is still in the battleground fighting the strong winds blowing on the Hyatt Regency Coolum Golf Club.
Commenting on rest of the field, Gates said, "I don't know if you ever get used to it (leading overnight) but there's still a lot of golf, those guys out there are pretty good so we'll just wait and see and relax this afternoon and if I have to sleep on
it I'll sleep on it."
Second round of Australian PGA Championship is in progress at the par-72 course.
