Australian Political Parties?

I don't get it. Is it true that only Labor or Liberal can be in power? If so, what are the Greens, Democrats, Nationals and such for? Can they ever be in power?

If they do, then how come they don't get much attention?

  1. The political party that wins the largest number of seats will be the party that forms government.

The Liberals and Nationals both conservative parties, if elected, usually form government together as a coalition.

If the Greens or Democrats won enough seats they would form the government.

In the recent Federal election the Labor Party won the majority of seats and therefore formed the government.

During the run up to an election all the parties seem to get more than enough media time in my opinion.

  2. Anyone has the opportunity to be in power its just that the nationals, greensm democrats etc aren't big enough in the federal level.

The only two major parties are the Liberals/Nationals coalition and Labour. Except for some reason they spell it wrong.

Whoever wins the most seats in the house of representatives is the government, the other parties are called the opposition.

  3. They are not strong enough to gain power but are in the running.
