Australian Relay team conquers Women’s 4*100m freestyle title: Day one – World University Games
The Australian Relay team demonstrated their fabulous efforts and conquered the gold medal of the Women’s 4*100m freestyle relay event on the first day of the 2011 World University Games on Sunday, August 14, in Shenzhen, China.
The Australian squad edged out their closest competitors to earn the title of the event in an acknowledging time of 3 minutes and 40.03 seconds. Their time was 8.31 seconds behind the world record of 3 minutes and 31.72 seconds, set by the relay team of
Netherlands, who clinched the title of same event at the 2009 Rome World Championships. Nonetheless, their effort was 0.82 seconds under the Game Record of 3 minutes and 40.85 seconds, made by swimmers of USA, in Bangkok, during 2007.
The squad of the champion team included Cate Campbell, Alice Mills, Jessica Morrison and Marieke Guehrer, whose splendid efforts helped Australia to win the gold medal. They were followed by American team, which stayed just 0.16 seconds behind the gold medallist
and submitted a time of 3 minutes and 40.19 seconds. Subsequently, China earned the bronze medal of the event, as the squad remained only 0.10 seconds behind USA and reported in a time of 3 minutes and 40.29 seconds.
Moments later, Japan claimed the fourth fastest spot of the swim, as they stayed nearly three seconds behind the bronze finishers and posted a time of 3 minutes and 43.72 seconds. They were followed by Canadian team, which was 0.63 seconds slower than their
former finishers and clocked a time of 3 minutes and 44.35 seconds.
Meanwhile, Italy occupied sixth fastest spot of the event, as they remained just 0.15 seconds behind Canada and posted a time of 3 minutes and 44.50 seconds. Team New Zealand was the seventh fastest finisher of the event, as they produced a time of 3 minutes
and 44.64 seconds, while Belarus was disqualified from the event due to a false start by their last swimmer.
The arena was contented with the efforts of all relay teams, while the championship will conclude on August 19 after the completion of all swimming events.
