Australian Swimmer Stephanie Rice criticised for offensive Twitter comments
The Australian Champion, Stephanie Rice has been quoted making offensive comments about the homophobic community and had to face a lot of criticism from the public, media and the g*y community.
She insulted the South African rugby team over their defeat from the Australian team by making a comment on the popular social networking website Twitter. The comment posted by her said that “ suck on that you faggots”. However, she removed that post as soon as she realized what she had done but it was too late for it and the news spread like wild fire and infuriated the homophobic community all over the world.
Consequently, one of the advertising campaigns dissolved its contract with the athletic beauty. The swimmer gave a tearful press conference apologizing for the offense she caused. She was backed by one of her g*y friends. He does, despite supporting her through this ordeal, admit that she should not have done what she did. It will take the swimmer quite some time to make it up to the public and the people for this foolish act of hers.
A couple of people also removed connections with her on today’s most popular social networking website when they witnessed her response to the loss of the South African rugby team. Stephanie Rice is seen struggling with her damaged reputation. It is time for the media to act responsibly and not cause further outrage in the already angry community by projecting what she had said again and again.
The experts and her fans are actually taken aback and astonished that someone as rational and famous, make a comment like this and that too so publically where literally half the population can see what she is writing. The Olympic swimmer has unfortunately tarnished her reputation forever, as claimed by the critics.
Justifying what she did, the swimmer said that she realizes it was too naive of her to tweet what she did, but she was just taken over by emotions and she never meant to point out any community particularly. Her so called emotional c*m offensive outburst has not only cost her, her respect and reputation, but also money as she lost a contract with an advertising company. Some people are also of the view that the advertising campaign finished off its contract with the Australian champion just to make her feel ashamed of her immature behaviour. It is very likely that Stephanie will quit using Twitter as a result of this.
Stephanie Louise Rice was born on the 17th of June 1998 in Queensland. At the moment the athletic beauty is the holder of a World Record in the 400 metre women’s individual medley and is the winner of three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing. She trains at the Saint Peters Western Swimming Club in Brisbane under the coach Michael Bohl. The Olympic Champion won the Medal of the Order of Australia on the 26th of January last year. She also won the title of Telstra Australian Swimmer of the Year 2008 and the female Swimmer of the Year the same year from the Swimming World Magazine. Stephanie is also the holder of the Pacific Rim Swimmer of the Year 2008.
She went to Clayfield College in Brisbane. It was also found out that she was romantically involved with one of her fellow swimmers, Eamon Sullivan. Sullivan is a record holder in the 50 metre freestyle meet. Their relationship could not last for more than two years and ended in July 2008, before both of them went for the Beijing Summer Olympics.
From the consequences that the athlete is facing and yet has to face, is a lesson for everyone to learn, no matter if they are famous or not. Before tweeting anything or any comment, one should think twice as these social networking sites are even more public than newspapers and people all over the world are following what you do and write. What we think was pulled up as a joke can become a cause of offense for a whole community.
