Australian Tax problem?

im 17 and have a part time job at woolies and think im getting taxed too much.

last week i worked 13 hours for gross income of 175 bucks. then i got taxed 30 bucks from this and only received 145.

now i havent earnt 6000 bucks this year to have qualified for tax, so why am i losing so much money?

anyone else know why this happens?

  1. They automatically tax you at the base rate. But you'll get most of it back when you do your tax return. I got like $3000 back for the past two years because of that same thing. Plus if you earn heaps in one week, they tax you at the level of earning that much every week, so its really screwed up. But yeah, you'll get all the extra stuff back when you do your tax return.


  2. you really shouldnt be getting taxed at all for 175 a week, unless you earn that every week. they may be taxing you at the base rate.  but think of it as saving, you will get all of it back if you dont earn $6000 in a year when you do your tax return.
