Australian World Championship Time Trials: Day one - Recap
Day one of the Australian World Champion Time Trials got-off to a flying start with the impressive performances of Kyle Richardson and Marieke Guehrer in the Men’s and Women’s 100m freestyle events respectively, at SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide,
Australia, on June 29, 2011.
In the first event, Kyle Richardson of Chandler nabbed the Men’s 100m freestyle title with a victorious time of 48.89 seconds. Richardson said that he was fifty-fifty and he gave his best try. He is paying a close attention to his trainings regarding the
Olympic trials in the next year.
He further added, “I think not going to world championships this year could have made me hungrier for next year, but in saying that I'm really happy to be on the team and it's good to be up there near my best and mixing it with all the other boys as well.”
James Magnussen of SOPAC wound up second in 49.07 seconds, while Cameron Mcevoy of Southport Olympic was placed third in 49.92 seconds. Cameron Prosser of Melbourne Vicentre settled fourth in a time of 49.96 seconds.
Matthew Abood of Sydney University captured the fifth spot in 49.99 seconds, whereas, Luke Kerswell of Southside Aquatics INC wound up sixth in 50.12 seconds. Mitchell Patterson settled for the seventh spot on the podium in 50.14 seconds.
In another meet, Marieke Guehrer of Melbourne Vicentre won the Women’s 100m freestyle title with a winning time of 54.29 seconds. AMI Matsuo of Carlile secured the second spot in 55.11 seconds, while Jessica Morrison settled third in 55.14 seconds.
While speaking about the meet, Guehrer said, “I have been putting some really good swims together in training and it was great to just come out here tonight and execute the race I know I could. I can empathise with Libby as I retired in 2007 and it took
me about a year and a half before I put together a good 100m swim.”
Bronte Campbell of Indooroopilly wound up fourth in 55.24 seconds, while Melanie Schlanger of Southport Olympic earned fifth place honours with a time of 55.33 seconds. Libby Trickett of Chandler settled sixth in a time of 55.68 seconds.
Cate Campbell earned the seventh spot in 55.72 seconds, while Yolane Kukla of ST Peters Western finished eighth in 55.79 seconds. The ninth position was grabbed by Alice Mills of Southport Olympic in 55.82 seconds.
Brittany Elmslie of Brothers finished tenth in 56.05 seconds, whereas, Skye Cater of Cranbrook Eastern Edge settled eleventh in 56.71 seconds. Georgia Miller of Carlile finished twelfth in a time of 56.93 seconds.
The Australian World Championship Time Trials is a pivotal occasion for the young guns of Australia, as podium finishes in the event will help swimmers to qualify for the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
