Australian board to decide on sacking one selector
Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 will meet on Friday to take a decision on which of the Australian selectors will be axed from the panel. The Australian selection panel has four selectors and the inclusion of Greg Chappell
as a selector c*m national talent manager means that one of the others, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Cox-c66230, David Boon or Merv Hughes could be shown the door.
The fourth selector on the panel is Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors. Hilditch has been contracted till the end of the World Cup next year and he should retain his spot.
Hilditch said that it made sense to have four members in the selection panel instead of five. His rationale seems to come from the fact that he has had the experience of working with five members as well.
Hilditch said, "That will be a pity. I think all the selectors have performed really well. I have been a selector with a panel of three, and a panel of four, and a panel of five - four seems, I'd have
to accept, it's the right number."
The selectors have had it very tough in recent times with the Australian Test team slipping from their number one spot to being ranked five in the world. This has meant that the selectors have had to try
out many new players and consistency is lacking. Since 2008, 18 new players have been picked as compared to eight in the three years before that.
Cox could be the man who could be culled from the side given that he has been on the panel for the longest period – since 2006. He was the selector who took the decision to not pick Nathan Hauritz at Oval
in the Ashes 2009, and the spinner-friendly track handed an easy win to the English side.
Amongst other reasons, Cox and Boon have been criticised for their conflict of interest given that they are also a part of their state associations.
