Australian captain Ricky Ponting wants spinners to shine during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011
Australian captain Ricky Ponting has said that he wants his spinners to take wickets in the middle of the innings in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011.
The Aussies are playing two spinners in their line-up in shape of Jason Krejza and Steven Smith but both of them have failed to make an impression so far in the mega event in the Subcontinent.
Ponting said that he asked his spinners to experiment against Kenya by bowling in different stages of the innings and also asked them to bowl from different angles.
The Aussie captain openly expressed disappointment that his spinners could not even trouble the minnows like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752. “There was a bit of experimentation from the spinners, but in saying that, I still would have liked to see them making some breakthroughs
for us,” Ponting said.
The Australian captain emphasised on the fact that it was very important for a bowling line-up to get wickets in the middle overs when the ball gets old and does not assist the fast bowlers as much as it helps the spinners. That has not been the case for
the Aussies throughout the mega event so far but Ponting is still hopeful that his spinners can turn the tables in the later part of the tournament.
Ponting said, “Through those middle overs in this tournament when the ball gets old, and the wicket starts to spin, we are going to need our spinners to strike for us, and that didn't happen against Kenya.”
Australian bowling has been under heavy criticism since the retirement of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne and that was one of the reasons why the Aussies failed to regain the 2010-11 Ashes.
However, the comeback of Shaun Tait and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brett-Lee-c48419 has boosted the Kangaroos’ bowling in the limited overs format of the game. On top of that, Mitchell Johnson has found his rhythm back in the World Cup and is amongst the top wicket takers of the tournament.
Therefore, the biggest concern for the Australian management remains the spin department which has so far failed to impress.
