Australian champion James Magnussen weighs options for the upcoming Olympic trials – Swimming News
Australian champion, James Magnussen is weighing options for the upcoming Australian Selection Trials, as the 2012 London Olympic Games will be his first mega event.
Magnussen is the 100m freestyle gold medallist at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships and he has remained undefeated in his main event after that.
He has astonished everyone with his scintillating form at the South Australian meet in January, where he hit the wall with a dazzling 48.05 seconds effort to capture the title. His time ranks on the top of 2012 early world rankings while the 20-year-old
Magnussen pronounced his desire of improving his time at the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships.
Magnussen’s stated his aim to post a sub 48 seconds effort at the NSW meet in Sydney, but he remained noticeably slower and produced 49.02 seconds for gold medal. The Australian was highly interested in adding the 200m freestyle discipline to his Olympic
event schedule.
He was trying to choose one event from the 50m and 200m freestyle, but with his sluggish effort at the NSW meet, he has finally decided to take 200m event off his participation chart and has chosen the 50m freestyle.
“I really did [give it a lot of thought]. I thought the way I was swimming the 100m, I really did leave myself open for a quick 200m, and I even wanted to explore all the sort of opinions before I made a serious decision because the Olympics does only come
across once every four years, and you want to make the best of it while it's there,” he said.
“It was an option but I think you can't really dismiss the opinions of basically everyone you talk to,” Magnussen added.
Now that the 200m freestyle is off his list, Magnussen is trying to excel his season’s best at the upcoming Australian Selection Trials for the London Games in Adelaide. His ultimate goal is to improve his timing at the Adelaide meet and then he will try
to better Cesar Cielo’s world record of 46.91 seconds.
Many believed that the 200m event would have suited him more, but the Australian star has announced his verdict and is now preparing for the Olympic trials.
